Dynamic block targeting lets you control which content blocks are visible to specific users or user groups within a single email. Instead of creating and managing multiple email versions, you can target blocks so they are visible only to specific user groups or individual users. This ensures recipients see only the information relevant to them. The result: less manual work, fewer errors, and more engaging emails from one streamlined workflow.
When to Use Block Targeting
You are sending a company-wide email about an upcoming policy update. While the message applies to everyone, certain details differ by location.
Using dynamic block targeting, you can create an email and add:
- A block shown only to employees in Germany, with information about local regulations
- A different block shown only to employees in the US, outlining US-specific guidelines
- A general block shown to all recipients, such as the policy overview and key dates
Each recipient receives the same email but only sees the content blocks that are relevant to them. This eliminates the need to duplicate emails for each location and ensures accurate, personalized information is delivered in a single send.
Targeting Blocks to Users and User Groups
Prerequisites
- The target audience of the email is set to All Folder Users or User Groups and Users.
- You are using an email draft, not a template.
- In the Studio, navigate to Email > the draft email you want to target or start creating a new email.
- In the Email Designer or the Text Editor, select the block you want to target.
-
In the block's actions menu, click Block Visibility. The Block Visibility dialog opens.
-
Select Specific users and groups. The dialog expands.
- From the dropdown, select all users and user groups you want to target.
- Click Apply.
- Click Save.
You have successfully targeted a block to specific users. The block’s actions menu shows the number of users who will see the block in their email. You can now preview the email or send a test email.
Previewing Emails with Targeted Blocks
The preview allows you to either view the email for specific users or user groups (individually or combined) or to view a version that includes all blocks.
- In the Studio, navigate to Email > the email you have personalized with targeted blocks.
-
Switch to the Preview. The preview opens in the default view, showing all blocks of the email.
- Under Content Preview, select Visible to Specific Users or Groups.
-
Select the checkboxes for the user or user groups for whom you want to see the preview. You can also use the search function. As soon as you select a user or user group, the preview is automatically adjusted and only shows the blocks that are targeted to them and the blocks that are targeted to all users.
You have successfully previewed the email for specific users. You can now send a test email.
Sending Test Emails with Targeted Blocks
- In the Studio, navigate to Email > the email you have personalized with targeted blocks.
- Click Send Test Email. The Send Test Email dialog opens.
- Select the recipients for the test email.
-
Under Content Preview, select Visible to Specific Users or Groups to send a test email that only includes targeted blocks for specific users and the general blocks visible to all users.
- From the dropdown, select the users and user groups who will be the target audience of the test email. This allows you to test how the email will arrive in the inbox of the selected users and user groups.
- Select the language of the email.
- Click Send.
You have successfully sent a test email. The test email includes an information banner listing the selected users and user groups that were chosen as the target audience.
