Your Staffbase platform's menu is the main navigation tool that connects your users to key features and content. It provides structure and organization, helping your users easily navigate your platform. A well-designed menu enhances the overall user experience by making it easier to find and access what they need. It plays a vital role in supporting efficiency and promoting engagement. Establishing a clear hierarchy and using intuitive labeling are key factors in creating a user-friendly and accessible platform.
Users only see content in the menu they have access to, by default. Once you set the content visibility for users and groups in the plugin itself, for example in Chat, those settings automatically apply to the menu. The Staffbase platform allows for a variety of menu customizations, such as:
- Different menu layouts for mobile and intranet
- Customizable titles and icons for menu items
- Content visibility based on device type
Menu Types
The Staffbase platform has different menu types for the mobile and desktop environments. Learn more about the different menu types:
Navigational Shortcuts
The Staffbase platform offers a variety of features that support the menu and act as shortcuts. Supplementing your menu with any of these additional features can help distribute content, take some of the content load off the menu, and help your users quickly reach frequently used tools. Each feature can be further targeted to specific user groups.
Widgets
Using widgets, such as the Link List widget, Link Tiles widget, and Portfolio widget, on various pages distributes content that might otherwise overload the menu. These are ideal for providing quick access to an assortment of links and content in an appealing and easy-to-navigate manner. They can also be used to display top-used quick links or to cluster categories, such as departmental topics. Learn more about widgets.
Launchpad
The Launchpad is a great tool for clustering all third-party apps. By placing all links to external tools in the Launchpad, users will associate it as a springboard to jump out of the employee app and into a different application. Launchpad apps are sorted based on each employee’s usage, which gives it an especially personal touch. The highly customizable Launchpad can also be tailored to mobile and desktop so that users will only see apps available for the device type they are using. Learn more about configuring the Launchpad.
Mobile Quick Links Navigation
The Bottom Navigation Bar for mobile devices displays at the bottom of the mobile screen, giving quick access to high-use items. You can define up to four links, with the fifth leading to the Menu. You can export your menu items as CSV to identify the structure, and also adjust the quick links for the Bottom Navigation Bar. This allows users to reach frequently-used functions in the app with just one click. Learn more about the Bottom Navigation Bar.
Best Practices
A well-organized menu plays a key role in shaping how users experience and interact with your platform. It provides structure, supports productivity, and makes it easier for users to find the information and features they need. The best navigation structure will vary from organization to organization, but a few of our best practices can help you get started on the right path.
For both mobile and intranet menus, Staffbase suggests testing your menu structure with workshops and/or user tests before implementing and to keep testing to make sure the menu evolves with your organization.
Mobile Menu Best Practices
- Remove any unnecessary items or content to keep mobile menus simple and concise.
- Consider what information users commonly access on the go, such as important pages, contact details, or Chat.
- Avoid including links to desktop-only applications or content that can be difficult to view on mobile devices.
Intranet Menu Best Practices
- Limit top-level menu items to no more than eight to maintain clarity.
- Structure the menu based on how employees use the intranet by grouping related items and prioritizing frequently accessed content.
- Reduce content overlap to minimize confusion, use navigational shortcuts where possible.
