On which AI does the Staffbase Companion Editor run?
Staffbase Companion uses OpenAI’s ChatGPT 3.5 Turbo language model hosted securely on Microsoft Azure. The 3.5 Turbo model is OpenAI’s fastest and most efficient AI model for text generation. It also features significant accuracy improvements over its predecessors.
Where does the training sample come from?
Staffbase Companion uses only data from the instructions editors give. These instructions are fed into the language model from OpenAI. Staffbase plans to enable customers to integrate their company-specific data in the near future. Learn more about how OpenAI language models are developed at Microsoft.
Can other Staffbase customers or other third parties see what is generated with Staffbase Companion?
No, this is not possible. Whatever a Staffbase customer puts into the Staffbase Companion is not shared between customer environments and it cannot be seen by third parties. Staffbase Companion is based on Azure OpenAI Service and it does not store input provided by our customers. Staffbase Companion only uses the customer prompt to generate the output.
Is any data stored by OpenAI?
No. Microsoft hosts the OpenAI models within their Azure infrastructure, and all customer data sent to Azure OpenAI remains within the Azure OpenAI service.
Is any data stored by Microsoft?
Yes. The prompts (input) and completions (output) data may be temporarily stored by the Azure OpenAI Service for up to 30 days. This data is encrypted and is only accessible to authorized Microsoft employees for two purposes:
- Debugging in the event of a failure
- Investigating patterns of abuse and misuse to determine if the service is being used in a manner that violates the applicable terms
Is customer data used to train the OpenAI models?
No. Microsoft does not use customer data to train, retrain, or improve the models in the Azure OpenAI Service.
Why doesn’t Staffbase rely on a ‘conversational interface’?
Staffbase Companion meets users where they need assistance, rather than a single conversational interface. By integrating AI directly into the product, we avoid the need to switch between solutions and enhance efficient workflows.
What future developments are planned for Staffbase Companion?
The next step in Staffbase’s AI journey is to enhance workflow efficiency in news content creation by integrating our Staffbase Companion more seamlessly within the post editor. Going forward, we will also focus on more editorial guidance use cases. This will enable communicators to take full advantage of all forms of generative AI directly from the Staffbase Studio.
Does my organization allow services like Staffbase Companion?

How does Open AI relate to copyright laws?
The treatment of AI-generated works under copyright law is an open question, and the answer may vary per jurisdiction. Between Staffbase and its customer, we consider the ownership of the input for and output of the AI Companion to rest with our customer, not Staffbase.
