What requirements must I comply with when creating the CSV file?
- The first column must hold the email addresses or internal or external IDs of the recipients. This column must be named identifier. The column name is case-sensitive, so it cannot be Identifier or IDENTIFIER. The email addresses, however, are not case-sensitive.
- The file must use UTF-8 text encoding.
- The cell separator must be a semicolon (;).
- We recommend not using system personalization names such as firstName or lastName as custom tags. Instead use firstNameCustom for example.
Can I reuse the CSV file when I duplicate the email draft?
No, the CSV file has to be uploaded individually for each email. It is not saved to be used across emails.
Can I delete an uploaded CSV file?
Yes, you can delete the CSV file by clicking the trash icon. Then you can start the upload again.
Can I have an example CSV file?

What happens if the CSV includes a recipient but no data for the single-use tags for this recipient?
The email will still be sent to this user, and the fallback text will be used. In the error report that can be downloaded after uploading the CSV, a warning will be shown, indicating that data is missing.
If I typed the tag name manually, how can I see if it was recognized?
- The system is case-sensitive. Tags will be recognized as long as the correct word and brackets are used.
- Valid tags are automatically recognized and displayed.
- Invalid tags (tags with a typo or tags that are not included in the CSV file) will be shown with a warning banner and will not be sent.
Are single-use custom tags available across all language versions of the email?
- Yes, single-use custom tags are global to an email draft and available across all its language versions.
- When a new language version is added, all existing single-use tags are available.
- The fallback text for a tag is specific to one language version; new language versions will have an empty fallback text field.
How do single-use custom tags look in the preview of the email?
- Valid tags are shown as the actual text from the CSV.
- Invalid tags are removed and not shown.
- If a fallback text has been set, it is shown instead of the tags if you select Fallback Text from the Personalization dropdown on the left.
How do single-use custom tags behave in test emails?
- When the test email is sent to a user who is not included in the CSV file, the tags are replaced with the fallback text or nothing if no fallback text is available.
- When the test email is sent to a user who is included in the CSV file, the tags will be replaced with the respective data.
