Why do I see Opens coming from "Image Proxy", "Gmail Proxy" or "Mountain View, CA" when I view the details of a sent email that was tracked by Employee Email?
This is due to the way that Gmail handles image downloads which are used to track when, where, and how emails are opened.
When Gmail stopped blocking the automatic download of images they also put in place a proxy to obscure the end-user and provide a layer of anonymity.
This means that when you open an email in Gmail, your details are recorded as a Linux-based Google Proxy in California since that is the device being used to download the images for you.
What these type of Open Details look like for a sent email in the Employee Email web app:
People with administrator accounts in your organization's Google Apps (GSuite) have the ability to allowlist specific domains to bypass the Gmail Image Proxy so that you can record more accurate location metrics.
