The Android app icon is visible on the home screen of your Android device. Android also refers to this icon as launcher icon. You need to provide two app icon files:
- Legacy Icon: For Android 7 and earlier
- Adaptive Icon: For Android 8 and higher
Legacy Icon
The legacy icon is used for devices with Android 7 and earlier. On Android devices, every launcher displays app icons differently. Some launchers place the icons on square backgrounds, while others cut icons into a round shape. But the legacy icons for Android 7 and earlier have a specific requirement and look the same across all Android devices.
Requirements for the Legacy Icon
- Size: 1024 x 1024 px
- Resolution: 72 dpi
- Color profile: sRGB
- File format: png
- If your app icon uses characters: maximum 6 - 10 including spaces
- Use the available place and position the logo using the whole space
- Transparency possible
- Any shape
- Optional shadows/borders as part of your icon
- Filename: AppIcon_Android-legacy.png
Adaptive Icon
The adaptive icon is used for devices with Android™ 8 and higher. On Android™ devices, every launcher displays app icons differently. Some launchers place the icons on square backgrounds, while others cut icons into a round shape. Adaptive icons were introduced with the intention of making all icons on a given Android™ device, starting with Android™ 8 and higher, look more consistent in terms of size and shape.
Android™ introduced adaptive icons with a specified safe zone that will always be displayed to accommodate all of these varying icon types. Staffbase supports adaptive icons, ensuring your app icon will always look great on all devices and Android™ versions.
Requirements for the Adaptive Icon
- Size: 1024 x 1024 px
- Resolution: 72 dpi
- File format: png
Staffbase supports adaptive icons with one layer only. - No transparency
- Square, with corners
- If your app icon uses characters: maximum 6 - 10 including spaces
- Mind the safe zone: place the logo within the safe zone in the middle and leave the edges free. Critical elements inside the safe zone only.
- The background outside the safe zone can contain shadows, gradients, or patterns.
- File name: AppIcon_Android-adaptive.png
The adaptive icon source file that you provide differs from the app icon that is displayed on the device later. On the adaptive app icon that you provide, fill the corners.
You cannot control the final shape of an adaptive icon as every launcher creates the final shape on the respective device.
