Conditional user groups are a special type of internal user group. A user cannot subscribe to or unsubscribe from a conditional user group. The management of conditional groups can be automated by tagging users to groups using CSV syncs or User API.
This method of group management is ideal for large organizations, where personnel changes occur frequently. To provide relevant content to your users, such as department-specific or location-based content, create a conditional group and simplify group management.
Prerequisites:
- You have created an internal user group with the membership type Automated based on tags.
- You have enabled tagging for one or more profile fields. Note that a profile field must have values for minimum one user to be used as a tag.
Adding a Tag to a Conditional Group
- In the Studio, navigate to User Settings > User groups.
- Click on the user group you would like to set up.
- Click Edit group.
A dialog to edit the group opens. - Click into the Choose tag field and a dropdown list of available tags opens.
- Choose the tag you want to assign to this conditional group.
This tag can be modified at any time. - Click Save.
Users with the selected tag associated with their profile have been automatically added to the conditional group.
Adding Multiple Tags to a Conditional Group
It is possible to configure a conditional group with multiple tags using And Conditions and Or Conditions. This allows you to broaden or narrow the scope of a group beyond one tag.
And Conditions
Your content might only be relevant for a smaller subset of users. In these cases, it is possible to narrow your target group by setting additional conditional tags called And Conditions in the group settings. Here is how:
Click Add condition in the Edit group dialog and select a second tag from the newly displayed input field. Repeat these steps to add additional And Conditions. This is useful if you want to create, for example, a group for a specific department, but only for users in a particular office location.
In this example, only users who are tagged in the Sales department and the Dresden office location will be added to this group.
Or Conditions
You may have content you want to make available to multiple departments or office locations. Use Or Conditions to configure a conditional group for multiple tags:
In the group settings, click into the Choose tag field and choose another tag. Repeat to add a third tag or more. This can be useful if you want to target, for example, offices based in Europe or by content language.
All users tagged with one or more of the selected tags will be automatically added to the group.
